I'm not much of an artist either. I've had difficulty in using 3D modeling programs after several tries so I gave that up. What works for me, mostly because of the programming side of my nature, is POV Ray (www.pov-ray.org) which allows you to create some very nice (nearly) photo-realistic images. It relies on a bit of understanding of geometry and can get as complex as you can bear or as simple as you like.
