[SDL] SDL Mixer changing system panning

Every time I play a MIDI file with Mix_PlayMusic, it changes the system SW
Synth (MIDI sequencer) output's panning setting all the way to the left. 
I'm running Windows XP Home and I've tested this with multiple MIDI files. 
I haven't set any settings that would affect music panning before executing
this command.  Does anyone know what's going on and how to stop it?
