[SDL] SDL performance over OpenGL performance.

Hi everyone!
On a forum I've seen that SDL is quite slow for simple tasks, it's even
slower than OpenGL most of the time.
On 2D games with a lot of sprites and details it really is slooow.
Why?
Does SDL only use CPU (software)? Doesn't it also use GPU (hardware)?
