good reproduction of those kinds of things, you create a short MIDI file
yourself and use the sound card and save to some kind of digital audio file.
This audio file you then play back using SDL's audio stuff. This avoids trying
to match to all sound card MIDI reproduction and the issues you highlighted...
I know GM has a limited library of actual sound effects, but if it is all you've
got it's a better way than nothing.
But it would definitely be a last resort! Better to just do a search on the Net
first to avoid re-inventing the wheel...
