[SDL] SDL and math symbols and/or pdf import

Does anyone have, or know of, a library for displaying math symbols, 
equations, etc using SDL? Alternatively, is there a library for importing and 
displaying PDF files?

I'd like to create a program for algebra students to test their problem 
solving skills, and such libraries could save much time not having to 
reinvent the wheel.
