[SDL] sdl init failed, no available video device

I had to reinstall my Gentoo Linux and I have found a weird problem. I 
downloaded and compiled sdl 1.2.11 correctly, but when I try to launch 
an application that uses SDL I get an error about failed initialization, 
no available video device. What can be the cause of this problem?
