[SDL] could not intialize SDL

hi guys:
I m using ffmpeg package that makes a player "ffplay" using SDL functions.
i have tried to run this media player but I gor the following error:

Could not intialize SDL - unable to open a console terminal

I m using Linux SUSE 9.2.
can anyone help me Please?
