I think as long as Sam has'nt said anything against it then it's fine
with us, in fact a few years back a lot of us at #sdl discussed SDL
T-shirts and coffee mugs, but none of us knew about cafepress back
then (if they even existed). We always knew that a small niche market
did exist for SDL merchandise.

I'm not sure but I doubt it, I bounced the idea with Sam way before
the logo contest (so far back I bet he does'nt remember) about needing
a SDL logo that looks good in print, though I envisioned it for
software boxes, not merchandise. Ideally something in a
vector/publishing format like postscript. Maybe it's time for another
logo contest?
