[SDL] The status of SDL 2.0 ?

Is anyone currently working on SDL 2.0? I saw CVS files and notes but it 
looks far from an alpha. Any projected release date or are we still in planning 
phase?
I'd also like to veto the complete removal of CD-ROM support, it's great that 
SDL can do this, and if it already does why stop it?
