[SDL] Support for a SDL "Community" page?

I just find often times people that choose MS do because its the only option they know. I like to educate people so they know theres more out there than what is spammed at them (:

plus SDL is multiplatform! directx is aiming to be, but i think they will fail because their way of making themselves multiplatform is by teaching the other platforms how to work with their setup, instead of making their setup work with other platforms.

Also, if directx acts like other APIs, it might disapear in a couple years and be replaced by something else. What are the DX coders going to do then? If it does disapear down the road, SDL will use whatever the new thing is and all SDL coders will still be able to compile, run and distribute their software.

If you look at your options, how can directx really compare to SDL?

thats my take on it of course, everyone is allowed to have their own opionions and i dont want to start a war so my message is that "SDL ROCKS!" not that MS sucks (:

SO....you are converting from DirectX to SDL, could you tell us why? Sounds like
  some good marketing fodder...

i also vote yes, i personly wont go there often but i know lots of people
ive been converting from directx to SDL that would benefit from this.

Im picturing something like this strongly tied into the main sdl page.

For example if there are newbie tutorials, maybe at the bottom of the page
it lists the SDL functions used and each is a clickable link to the doc's
for that function.

The SDL page is technicaly speaking 100% awesome, but as far as helping out
people coming into it, or continuing to learn about it, it isnt setup
optimaly. Its quick and to the point if you know what you want, but if you
dont, its hard to find information.

So yeah, i vote yes and would send many people that way (:

I vote yes. I agree the technology needs more "marketing".

      Hey everyone,

Recently I have been looking around the net for more SDL related
sites, and
am pretty shocked by the lack of them. I noticed recently that the
SDL News
Portal (http://sdl.lynx.lv/) shut down, which is a shame really,
        because
something like that could have been very good to a community like this.

Don't get me wrong, I think the SDL site is good for what it is,
about SDL
and small bits of information about releases, but there is really
nothing
more that than.

What I am proposing is a much larger SDL community page, which I am
willing
to invest time and money (ala domain name) in, but only if I know
I'll get
the support and backing of the larger community. I've been looking for
something to do with my site at the moment, as I have a server
running at
the moment with unlimited space and bandwidth and all the bits and
pieces I
would need to create this site. At the moment it's sitting doing nada
except my personal site. Almost everything is on there to start off
right
away if I needed to (have a look at http://tane.cream.org). The weblog
software I am using is Geeklog, and I used to be one of the
developers on it
so I like it because I know it's powerful and I am familiar with the
inner
workings. There is already a forum up and running, and a few other
plugins
that it uses that can make a great community site.

I'm proposing that on the site, there can be daily news about SDL
releases,
technical updates, new games using SDL, and also once in a while
tutorials
or editorials. There is also a forum that newbies, or even seasoned
        SDL
developers can use to post on (though this list is usually fine for
that),
and private forums could even be requested and created. Users could
upload
their own files, and after a quick virus check, these can be
published to
the site, allowing the community to download and share.

There are many other ideas that I have, but I don't want to get too
        deep
into them, I've already written enough I think, so now I am asking
you out
there, do you think its a good idea and is it worth it?

As I have said, I am willing to invest into this, but ONLY if people
think
its a good idea. I don't want to spend time of it, only to shut it
        down
after a few months because no one wants to use it. And I don't want
take
anything away from the official site or this list, but a few
        discussions
recently on this list have shows that there could be a need for a
site like
this, if manage properly.

Again, have a look at the current site. Please note, it is a
PERSONAL site
at the moment, so there would obviously be a few changes made, but
the url
is http://tane.cream.org

Thanks everyone,
Tane Piper

I like the idea of a site for the SDL community... I assure you that
it would be one of the sites I like to visit daily... Even though I'm
kind of new in the SDL community, I'm just starting to change my
3Dengine to SDL so that it can be portable... Let's hope the rest of
the community agree with the existance of that new site... I do
believe it would very usefull!
