I had it working nicely in almost fullscreen on a 386 DX 40.

Mostly, the core drawing functions where Assembler. The C wasn't even very
good, some critical parts where optimized by TeamTNT in there Doom port
Boom. Almost all Doom ports today have removed the Assembler stuff, cause
it was slower(!) on 486 and above, it had optimizations for 386 which did
harm to the caches and other stuff.
