[SDL] Restricting SDL to a Panel within a Window...

Hi All,
   One of the members of the JEDI-SDL mailing list is having a problem 
when trying to restrict the output of SDL to a Panel. If he uses...
SDL_putenv('SDL_VIDEODRIVER=windib');

Everything works fine but if he tries...
SDL_putenv('SDL_VIDEODRIVER=directx');

it crashes.
Does anyone have any suggestions as what may be causing the crash.
