not quite right --- linux on most platforms has a timer granularity
(for timed sleeps) of 10 ms, but on Alpha it's 1/1024 s. It can be
changed by modifying HZ and recompiling the kernel, and doing so
reportedly gives better latency in a variety of circumstances (though you
may need to recompile some userland apps/libs if they have HZ compiled-in)
