[SDL] problems mod mixing

I cannot control the volume of mod music played using SDL_Mixer 1.2.0, and 
SDL 1.2.0.

The volume can be set to either 0 or (I assume) 128.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?  If not, could someone post some code 
(or a link to some code) with the correct usage of SDL_Mixer?
